Lighten Up

Back during chemotherapy, I remember thinking to myself that if I just kept my head down and did what I had to do, that someday things might go back to being normal again. But man, who saw 2020 coming!? Between COVID and an upcoming election, the outside world feels heavier and more full of fear, anger and general frustration than anything else. It’s gotten so overwhelming to the point of reminding of how treatment once felt, like let’s just get through this mess however we can, one day at a time.

Fortunately, if nothing else, the past few years have taught me how to cope with dark situations.

Here are a few standout thoughts and suggestions as of late:

  • News and Social Media: We’re all craving connection and want to stay informed, but if you haven’t already, check out The Social Dilemma on Netflix. Despite all the attention it’s gotten, I almost didn’t watch and thought I knew everything (we have no privacy, comparison is the thief of joy, etc.) but the way they break down the inner workings of these apps and how they influence people really left an impression on me. Social media still has plenty of value but its good to at least educate yourself on what’s going on behind the scenes.

  • Plant life: Kori and I recently bought a few starter plants. It didn’t go very well, we’re still adjusting to the limitations of a Manhattan apartment, butttt the idea was a winner. The few survivors have really perked up the place, and now that I’ve researched a little and know the lay of the land, we’re gonna set ourselves up for success with the next batch. You just wait and see.

  • Read actual books: I love a good story and find the act of reading calming as opposed to TV, where the bright screen and explosive soundtrack can be overly stimulating when I just want to wind down. Books also boost vocabulary, keep your brain sharp, and have no commercials. Throw in a cup of tea, maybe a square or two of 95% Lindt dark chocolate… the height of luxury, no?

  • Meditation: A magical, heavenly drug that until I experienced first hand, had no idea what I was missing. Takes a little discipline to build the muscle up front but will be one of the greatest gifts you ever give yourself. Calm app, game changer.

  • Music: Sirius XM’s really been holding it down for me. I’ve got all my favorite channels ready to go and love when the DJ’s take charge of a playlist. Less thinking for me and they keep the listening fresh. Music’s generally been huge for my spirits… whether blasting tunes over the speakers or breaking out the Strat to learn new covers and guitar solos. Music does the body good.

  • Gratitude journal: Might feel a little cheesy at first, but I got one of those free apps and aim for 3 things each day. It’s pretty wild how as soon as your brain changes filters, all different parts of your day that you may have forgotten went well (or at least, didn’t go wrong) start popping up. Keeps things in perspective and immediately raises your mood. Healthy stuff.
